The Body Belongs

A passion for restoring the body to the emotional healing process

As Christians we tend to underestimate the value of the physical body. Our natural emphasis is on soul and spirit but the Bible tells us that the body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. The body is also where trauma lives, so when we work on healing trauma, we must address how trauma is stored in the body as well.

The Lord led us to this and it’s been a game changer for helping people. It restores a sense of safety after difficult times. By using this method, healing happens. As people are less overwhelmed, relationships improve. Peace is restored, making it is easier to move forward with faith and hope.

Eric: I want people to understand that the body matters and why. Theologically and practically. How God wired our nervous system, especially our defense system.

The effect of past trauma on the nervous system and how to incorporate some basic tools to work with it.

Being a safe place for the traumatized person is doing the opposite of trauma. Trauma can be described in a phrase of ‘too much, too soon, too fast’ We do the opposite to heal that.

Why the body matters!

Why this teaching is so needed in the body of Christ

  • First, Christians affirm that creation is good, which makes it inherently trustworthy. Our belief that God created the world as an expression of His goodness is central to our faith (Heb. 11:3). In the creation narrative in Genesis 1, the declaration of creation as “good” occurs seven times, a number symbolizing perfection in the Old Testament. The early church confronted a heretical belief known as Gnosticism, which claimed that the material world, including our bodies, was untrustworthy or evil, suggesting that the “real” self was trapped within. This misconception has resurfaced in modern times, leading to the notion that our bodies cannot be trusted. However, the God revealed in the Bible created our bodies in His image and declared us very good.
  • Second, our physical bodies serve as signposts to spiritual mysteries. At the beginning of creation, God was already preparing humanity for the eventuality—eternally present to Him—of sending His only Son into the world through the profound mystery of the incarnation. God designed us to be the perfect vessels for His greatest revelation, knowing that one day Jesus would enter the world in human form. The Book of Hebrews quotes Psalm 40:6 as if spoken by Jesus, declaring, “A body you have prepared for me” (Heb. 10:5). Thus, our very bodies point to the mystery of the incarnation.

In this seminar, you will find out why the body matters, and why the body needs to belong if we are going to see real healing in ourselves and in others.  If we learn to ‘listen’ to what the body says then we can track that in our nervous systems and in our emotions.  This helps us to know what ‘state’ we are in and then help us find the path ways to being safe and social again.  This recreates new neuro pathways in our brain and helps us know in our whole body that we are past the trauma (event) and now can move forward in freedom.  This way of seeing helps us know ourselves better and how to relate to others that might be trapped in their own trauma and emotional states, long after the trauma event is over.

“In order to change, people need to become aware of their sensations and the way that their bodies interact with the world around them. Physical self-awareness is the first step in releasing the tyranny of the past.”
